The Hub City of the Asian Culture Project started with the aim of making Gwangju, the city of art, human rights and peace, the hub of Asian culture and establishing a spontaneous model of a city.

The core of the project is the Asia Culture Complex which is going to be built on a premise of 128,621㎡ around the former Jeollanam-do province office, which is the symbol of Gwangju. Approximately 700 billion won will be invested in the building with a total floor size of 178,199㎡. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in Dec. 2005 and construction will be completed in May 2010. The Asian Culture Complex will be built based on 3 concepts that include the landmark of the hub city of Asian culture, the symbolic building that displays the spirit of Gwangju and a culture center for residents.

The facilities to be built in the Asian Culture Complex include the Asian Culture Interchange Center, the Center for Asian Culture, the Asian Culture Creation Center, the Asia Art Plex and Children's EduCulture Center based on 6 concepts including the May 18th Democratic Movement, bamboo, transparency, future, space and venue.

The Asian Culture Complex will provide experts with an important place for creative activities, experiment, display, research and a collection of cultural products in Asia while becoming a hub for the interchange, creation, education and research of Asian culture. The Asia Culture Complex will serve as a creative community center that connects experts and non-experts with each other while linking regional institutions that have similar functions.
