National geology park of Mountain Mudeung area, has been selected to be a candidate for UNESCO world geology park
- The Geology park committee highly evaluated the geological value and the efforts of local government and residents
- Mt. Mudeung is to get the 'elasticity' as an international attraction for geological tourism

○ National geology park of Mt. Mudeung area as been selected as a candidate for UNESCO world geology park in the 14th meeting of geology park Committee (Committee chairman, Vice minister of Ministry of Environment Lee Jeongseop) on October 7th.

○ Committee members of geology park gave high scores in the evaluation of the geological as well as the topographical values of the national geology park of Mt. Mudeung area, considering the efforts of Gwangju city, Jeonnam province together and the cooperation of the residents, etc.

○ In particular, columnar joints such as Ipseok-dae and Seoseok-dae, etc. and dinosaur fossil place at Seoyu-ri of Hwasun in Jeonnam province, etc. were decided to be provided as a global geological attraction, a request was made during the preparation. the certificate application was submitted, which it include the plans where residents participated in management of the geology park, and mentioned that the area applied for certification of UNESCO world geology park was partly expanded beyond the national geology park, also, the contributions of the geology park could bring to local residents' economy.

○ Meanwhile, Gwangju city signed a service contract to implement the certification of Mt. Mudeung area for the UNESCO world geology park with the Geological Society of Korea (The Geological Society president and Professor Huh Min of Jeonnam National University) on last March 15th, and conducted preliminary due diligence twice with participation of Marco Comack as the secretary general of International Geological Science Union, Jose Calbo as Vice-chairman, Patrick MacIver as the secretary general for UNESCO World Geology Park, etc.

○ On September 22nd, the letter of intent of the certification application for Mt. Mudeung area as UNESCO world geology park was submitted, furthermore, we announced our application during the 7th general assembly meeting of world geology park program held in UK from September 27th to 30th, and we operate a booth to promote the Mt. Mudeung geology park area, involving parties in the Global Geopark.

○ For the forthcoming schedule, UNESCO is scheduled to conduct x-document screening of certification application and field evaluation next year and will decide on final certification status during the UNESCO execution board meeting in April, 2018, however, the application for certification of Mt. Mudeung area as an UNESCO world geology park will be submitted to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France by the coming November 30th.
